Cambridge Futsal 4 Bristol Welsh 6

The first game of the new FA National Futsal Series Tier 2 season saw the Bees welcome a new team, Bristol Welsh, to their home venue, the magnificent 400 seater University of Cambridge Sports Centre.

The match was preceded by a minutes silence in respect of the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Bristol, consisting of many top quality players that only a few weeks ago represented Cardiff (and the Welsh FA) in the UEFA Futsal Champions League, got off to a flying start taking a 2 goal lead within the first few minutes.

The Bees Head Coach Luis Mendonca managed to settle his startled looking new squad in their brand new sponsored home kit but not before they had gone a further goal behind around the 10th minute.

It wasn’t until a few minutes before half time that the home supporters had a goal to make some noise about scored by Michael Di Franco.

HT 1-3

After being entertained during the break by the numerous children in attendance playing an ad hoc game, the home crowd were soon buzzing as Cambridge drew level 3-3 with a couple of quick fired goals coming from Ignachio Zarauza & a second from Di Franco.

However, the visitors weren’t to be overcome so easily. With the Bees pressing with keeper Chay Jake’s in an attempt to secure a lead, they were caught twice in quick succession with an empty net and the score soon went to 3-5 and then 3-6.

Captain Jonny Tofts attempted to get the Bees back into the game with one of his signature long range strikes but it was too little, too late. The time clock buzzer sounded the end of the game with the score 4-6 with all 3points making their way back West.

A high quality, high tempo, excellent match played in a wonderfully competitive spirit infront of noisy, enthusiastic support.

Next Sunday sees the Bees host their local rivals Bedford in the local “West Anglia” derby.
