Historic weekend for the Bees

Saturday saw Cambridge Futsal Clubs Women’s First Team playing their FA National Futsal Series league match v Southampton Aztecs at the 300 seater Arena Bedford.

Looking to secure their first point of the season, coaches Paris Brixey & Erol Opal were pleased to be able to take a full women’s squad which would allow for rotations, crucial in the high intensity, competitive world of 5 aside futsal. Several players were making their debuts.

2-1 ahead at Half Time, the Bees were looking very good against a visiting team from the south coast looking to break into the Top 4 of the division.

The Aztecs proved to be worthy opponents and at 4-5 looked like they were going to steal all the points. But then with less than 2mins left on the countdown clock, a pin point accurate far past cross from Silvia TARANTINO saw connection on the volley made by ever combative Emily SMITH and as the ball hit the net, she turned with arms outstretched to a cacophony of noise from the small but vocal "amber army" with their drum, flags and air horn.

Wonderful scenes at the end of the game as the team realised they had secured their very first point of the competition.

Sunday saw the Men’s First Team make probably their furthest away journey, the 462mile round trip to Somerset to play Bristol Welsh in a surprising morning kick off!

There was another 2-1 score line at half time but this time the Bees entered the second half chasing to get back in the game.

Fantastic effort from the 9 man squad saw them take the lead on several occasions but the scores were quickly levelled by an experienced side.

With just 40 heartbreaking seconds to go, the Bees sloppily gave possession away resulting in a quick counter attack and far post pass tap in goal snatching all 3points for the home team.

A long, long drive home to reflect on a disappointing result but not overall performance where the mixed squad of experience & youth gave everything they had.

The result saw the Bees drop down to a clear 5th in the Midlands & West Division.
